Society Welcome
![]() Welcome to the official home page for the UK and US Chapters of the Dead Malt Society (DMS). The DMS was established in 2012 by Dwight Morris and Mike Blaum, with a group of American and British malt whisky enthusiasts who live and work in the Harrogate Borough of North Yorkshire, UK. The DMS exists to advance public understanding of the history, production and intrinsic quality of scotch malt whisky and other distinguished spirits and advocate responsible alcohol consumption.
The DMS is affiliated in spirit (no pun intended) with the Humphrey's Whisky Club. |
What We Do

The DMS hosts monthly celebrations of malt whiskies – both alive and at death's door. These meetings feature limited expressions not typically found in the mainstream, some from distilleries that have disappeared altogether. Specifically, you will be treated to:
- A 'welcome dram' to calibrate your senses
- A guided nosing and tasting of three featured drams
- A rare, specially selected Deoch an Doras (drink at the door) dram
- A chance to buy the remainder of your favorite whisky of the night
- Food provided by attendees (potluck)
The price of a typical evening is £25 (UK)/$40 (US) with all proceeds going toward paying that night's supplies. Each meeting concludes with the auctioning off of the evening's bottles (be sure to bring extra cash, which will help us to order more and more intriguing and rare expressions . We kindly ask that attendees bring a potluck dish to share when possible, as well.
Special future tasting events may include: whisky nosing/tasting masterclasses, blind tasting competitions with prizes, free samples, presentations on the history and production of whisky, charity auctions, and possible guest speakers.

How We Do It
The Society runs on a completely not-for-profit basis, using all collected funds for sustaining its activities. All funds collected at tastings will be used for the purchase of the next meeting's bottles or other activities approved by the group's members.
A list of the bottles we will sample will be posted in a flyer before each meeting so that members will know what's in the queue. The DMS advocates responsible alcohol consumption. All tasting participants are required to indicate their plan for getting home on the night of an event. Driving is NOT an option for drinking participants.
No person under the age of 21 will be served.
